Research Partners
- UGent, Dept. of Biology, Laboratory of Protistology and Aquatic Ecology (PAE)
– Prof. dr. Wim Vyverman
PAE studies the biology, ecology and biodiversity of microalgae and protozoa, with a strong focus on diatom micro-evolution and speciation, life cycle regulation, biogeography, and population- and community dynamics. PAE & PSB are participating in the EU Diatomics project, a multidisciplinary consortium that studies basic diatom biology and how it is affected by environmental changes. A unique culture collection of freshwater and marine diatoms is maintained at the laboratory, supported by the Belgian Coordinated Collections of Micro-organisms.
- UGent, Dept. of Molecular genetics, Plant Systems Biology (PSB)
– Prof. dr. Dirk Inzé
PSB conducts fundamental plant research in a number of areas, including metabolism, biofuels and biomass, cell division, and genome analysis. To that end the most advanced molecular and cellular biology techniques are used as well as functional genomics based cutting-edge technologies. PSB has already been involved in the annotation of algal genome sequences. PSB also belongs to the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB), an institute that promotes translational research enabling the transfer of knowledge from plant models to crops.
- UGent, Laboratory of Microbial Ecology and Technology (LabMET)
– Prof. dr. Willy Verstraete
LabMET has a track record of some 25 years in the domain of anaerobic digestion processes and the design of novel technology. LabMET has been at the onset of the ‘dry anaerobic converting ‘process, worldwide known as Dranco and marketed by the Belgian firm OWS, Gent. LabMET currently is exploring several new approaches in the domain of anaerobic digestion such as the co-digestion of farm and industrial wastes and the coupling of AD and Bio-Electrochemical Systems (BES).
- UGent, Dept. General Economics - Centre for Environmental Economics and Management (CEEM)
– Prof. dr. Johan Albrecht
The Centre for Environmental Economics and Management of the Department of General Economics has a long experience in the study of economic instruments for environmental and energy policy. The Centre provides teaching and frequently collaborated in international research projects. In recent years, the Centre developed methodological tools to assess the economic value of new technologies (energy technologies as well bio-pharmaceutical products).
- KULeuven-Campus Kortrijk Interdisciplinair Research Center (KULAK-IRC)
– Prof. dr. ir. Imogen Foubert
The Interdisciplinary Research Center (IRC) at the KULeuven-Campus Kortrijk consists of several research disciplines. A recently started group working on lipid (physical) chemistry and technology (Prof. Imogen Foubert) collaborates in this research project. Imogen Foubert has gained expertise in lipid (physical) chemistry during her doctoral and postdoctoral research at Ghent University, where she lead a research unit on lipids in foods in the Laboratory of Food Technology and Engineering.
- Wageningen University and Research Center, Dept. of Agrotechnology and Food Sciences, Bioprocess Engineering Group (WU-BPE)
– Prof. dr. Réné Wijffels
The bioprocess engineering group develops new biotechnological processes for manufacturing of food ingredients, biofuels, biopolymers, pharmaceuticals, and biopesticides. The last 10 years expertise has been built up in the area of microalgae cultivation, more specifically: photobioreactor design, process control and optimization, modeling of photoautotrophic growth in bioreactors and modeling of solar irradiation. The research group is exploring new research areas: production and in-vivo extraction of carotenoids and fatty acids, on-line process monitoring and control, metabolic flux modeling and strain selection.
- UGent, Power-Link
– Prof. dr. ir. Greet Van Eetvelde
Power-Link is a growing green energy platform of Ghent University and its network of West Flemish university college partners, acting in the interface between innovative energy producers and transferable R&D. Based in Ostend at Greenbridge Science Park, it acts as a centre of competence, providing a central information service on renewable and sustainable energy, coordinating projects in new tech energy research and encouraging rational and/or reductive energy consumption. Power-Link is a spinning partner in the Flemish energy scenery, evolving to a subregional energy agency. Embedded within the Port of Ostend, Power-Link contributes to the project as a coordination and dissemination partner.
