E-cube | Team Belgium: Ghent University
Team Belgium Ghent University, a student team of engineer-architects of Ghent University, and the only participating European team, designed and built a house on solar energy, E-cube, for the prestigious Solar Decathlon competition.
The international Solar Decathlon competition is organized in Washington DC two-yearly since 2002. In 2011, during ten days, the designed houses of 20 selected teams will be opened to the general public. This way, everybody can discover the combination of solar energy, energy efficiency and architecture. During this period the jury will award marks to the houses on the basis of ten disciplines such as architecture, comfort, budget friendliness, etc.
The E-cube is an affordable do-it-yourself construction kit which only energy source is the sun. The students designed the E-cube for each budget. For example, there is a starter kit that can be upgraded according to the wishes of the residents. This way, residents can put together a fully customized house and building costs are spread.
Power-Link plays an intermediary role, both in the search for sponsoring as for PR and communication.
This project is support by US Department of Energy - The National Renewable Energy Laboratory Solar Decathlon 2011 during the period autumn 2011
